Multidisciplinary Education

Trauma team training

A series of simulated trauma cases requiring intervention from each of the trauma team members.

Early Management of Severe Trauma Course

St George Hospital Trauma Service hosts 2 courses a year. The EMST course is a two and half day intensive course in the management of injury victims in the first 1–2 hours following injury. It is adapted from the Advanced Trauma Life Support ATLS® course of the American College of Surgeons. The emphasis is on developing life saving skills and a systematic clinical approach. It is designed for all doctors who are involved in the early treatment of serious injuries in urban or rural areas, whether or not sophisticated emergency facilities are available. On each course 4 nurse observers also participate.

Weekly Multidisciplinary Rounds

The trauma case managers host a weekly multidisciplinary meeting. Each trauma patient admission is discussed in terms of their management plan, any complications or required referrals. It is attended by all allied health disciplines, representatives from orthopaedics, neurosurgery, general surgery, rehabilitation and discharge planning. This important concept of care has been demonstrated to improve patient outcomes.

Ambulance

Trauma service staff contribute regularly to educational evenings for local ambulance personnel.

WHO fellows

St George Hospital trauma service regularly hosts WHO fellows from India, who have been granted fellowships to study “traumatology” in NSW public hospitals. The fellows are doctors, surgeons and have been chosen by the Indian government based on their qualifications, experience, position in the health system and ability to impart their new knowledge to their colleagues.

Tertiary teaching

The St George hospital trauma service has a close relationship with the Faculty of Nursing, University of Sydney, The College of Nursing and the University of Wollongong School of Nursing, Midwifery and Indigenous Health. We regularly provide education at an undergraduate and post graduate level for acute care nursing subjects, or the post graduate certificate in critical care or emergency. In addition, we have been heavily involved in curriculum development for the Masters of Critical Care Nursing at USyd.

Mass Casualty Symposium

Mass Casualty Symposium is a trauma-focussed event targeting clinicians, hospital and health managers that will bring together medical experts from around the world in the field of mass casualty incident response. The aim is to provide practical guidance for addressing actual clinical and organisational problems that would be encountered locally in the event of a major terrorist bombing or casualty incident. The previous Mass Casualty Symposiums held at St George in 2005 and 2007 were sold out, and attracted over 220 delegates, including Senior Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Clinicians from around Australia and New Zealand, as well as those from the Department of Health, the Defence Force and Rural Areas.
