The Physiotherapy and Hand Therapy Department provides physiotherapy and hand therapy services to Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital and other satellite units. The service is provided for inpatients and outpatients who have been referred by a medical officer.

Physiotherapy outpatients is situated on the Ground Floor of North Block. Hand Therapy is located on Level Two of the Clinical Services Building.

The Department is open from 8.00am - 4.30pm, Monday - Friday for outpatient services. A weekend on-call service is provided by a physiotherapist for inpatients.

As this is a part-time service (16 hours per week), access is limited to the following groups:

  • residents of the Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital catchment area
  • workers from the central business district
  • patients of Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital who have difficulty accessing timely treatment in their local area

A referral from a doctor or physiotherapist is required for all patients to receive physiotherapy.

 

Ward Physiotherapy Service

Physiotherapists provide physiotherapy assessment and treatment services to orthopaedic, general medical/surgical and eye (if applicable) inpatients. They also provide a weekly outpatient service to fracture, orthopaedic and pre-admission clinics.

Hand Therapy Service

The Hand Therapy Department provides a specialist assessment and treatment service for those patients with hand injuries/conditions. It also provides a hand therapy consultancy service for physiotherapists and occupational therapists at area, regional, state or interstate levels. It is staffed by physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

Referrals from doctors and therapists from outside the hospital are also accepted. Direct referrals from GPs are accepted provided that the patient lives within the local area and does not require the management of a hand surgeon.
