The Sydney Hospital Hand Unit provides a comprehensive elective and emergency service for all hand and wrist disorders within South East Health. It is also a major tertiary level centre for hand referrals from across New South Wales. The Hand Unit is located on the second floor of Sydney Hospital with a ward (2 West), Hand Clinic, and Hand Therapy Department.

Staff

The Hand Unit is staffed by the following surgeons: Dr James Masson (Director), A/Prof W Bruce Conolly, Dr Ian Isaacs, Dr Ian Hargreaves, Dr Douglass Wheen, Dr Peter Scougall, Dr Bryce Meads.

The junior medical staff consists of a hand fellow, orthopaedic registrar and intern.

The Hand Unit secretary, is located in the Hand Unit office, adjacent to the Claffy Lecture Theatre, and can be contacted on 61 2 9382 7350

The hand therapy department provides both inpatient and outpatient services and a consultative service to other therapists at Area, regional and state levels.

The hand therapy department is open from 8am - 4.30pm, Monday - Friday. Appointments can be made on 61 2 9382 7202.

The hand surgery ward, 2 West, is under the care of the nurse Unit manager and 10 full time registered nurses. There are 10 quarantined hand surgery beds for overnight and longer stay patients as well as access to day surgery facilities on the third floor of the hospital.

Services

A hand surgery outpatient clinic is run Monday to Thursday mornings from 9am - 12 midday. Appointments can be made on 61 2 9382 7201.

Elective surgery operating lists are offered throughout the week and emergency hand surgery services are provided 24 hours a day. In an emergency, patients can access our unit directly through the Emergency Department at Sydney Hospital. For emergency enquiries, including after hours, the Registrar or Fellow on call should be paged through the main hospital switchboard on 61 2 9382 7111.
