Human Resources (HR) Department

Telephone: 61 2 9382 7330 Fax: 61 2 9382 7320

The HR department is located on the first floor of North Block. The department is open Monday - Friday from 8.30am - 5pm.

The HR department's primary function is to provide a broad range of consultancy based HR services to management and staff of Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospitals, consistent with SESIAHS policies and standards for the effective delivery of services.

The HR department is responsible for the development and review of Occupational Health and Safety strategies, policies, programs and systems in collaboration with senior management and the Occupational Health and Safety Committee. The department provides a consultancy service to line managers to assist them in the elimination/minimisation of hazards to employees, patients and visitors. In addition, it is also responsible for the administration of workers compensation/rehabilitation and workplace assessments.

Criminal record/working with children checks:

In August 1997, NSW Health circulated revised policy guidelines (Circular 97/80) for the Recruitment and Employment of Staff and Other Persons - Vetting and Management to Allegations and Improper Conduct.

It is a NSW Health policy to conduct relevant criminal record checks of all recommended appointees.

No offers of employment/appointment can be made until the necessary checks are completed.

Code of conduct:

All staff receive a summary of the code of conduct with their appointment letter and are expected to familiarise themselves and comply with the code. The code of conduct specifies minimum standards of behaviour relating to areas such as performance of duties, standards of honesty and integrity, discrimination and harassment. Full time employees engaging in outside employment must seek approval from the chief executive officer.

Occupational health and safety:

The hospital's occupational health and safety committee meets regularly to review and maintain high standards of health and safety of all persons (including patients and visitors).

Manual Handling:

The hospital is committed to providing a minimal lifting environment for all staff. Whilst at work, staff are required to undertake training in safe manual handling, actively identify workplace hazards and make use of available mechanical aides and personal protective equipment when necessary.

An occupational health, safety and rehabilitation (OHS&R) numerical profile is conducted annually to measure OHS&R performance and identify areas for improvement. All staff and managers are required to be actively involved in this process.

Employee assistance program:

This service offers free, confidential and professional counselling to all employees and their families for any personal or work related concerns.

Smoke free workplace:

To protect the health of our patients, visitors and staff, all South Eastern Sydney Illawarra health buildings, grounds, walkways, entrances and car parks are smoke free. You must leave our grounds to smoke.
