About Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital

Incorporating the Sydney Sexual Health Centre, Kirketon Road Centre, ADAHPT and Langton Centre.

Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital is Australia's oldest hospital and dates from the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788. This historic facility has been located in Macquarie Street since 1816, and is steeped in history with a legacy of nursing and medical firsts to its credit.

Today, Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospitals' modern facilities and professional staff provide a strong blend of general and specialist medical services for the public.

Services include:

Sydney Hospital Emergency Department

  • Provision of a 24-hour emergency service, which is utilised primarily by workers and residents in the CBD, tourists, and the homeless.

Sydney Eye Hospital

  • State-wide tertiary referral and Professorial Unit
  • Performs more than half of the more complex public eye surgery in NSW, including procedures such as Corneal Grafting, Retinal Surgery and Ocular Plastic Surgery
  • Provision of a 24-hour emergency service
  • Accommodates the largest program in Australia for training ophthalmologists

Sydney Hospital Hand Unit

  • Tertiary referral centre for the treatment of hand trauma, abnormalities and diseases of the hand

Sydney Sexual Health Centre

  • Provides a state-wide tertiary referral service for people with sexually transmitted diseases
  • Services include screening, vaccination and management of sexually transmitted infections including HIV and Hepatitis A, B and C, education, individual and couple counselling and a needle and syringe program
  • Provision of professional training for health care workers

  • Located in Kings Cross, the Kirketon Road Centre is involved in the prevention, treatment and care of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections among "at risk" youth, sex workers and injecting drug users
  • KRC provides medical, nursing, counselling and social welfare services. KRC also operates comprehensive needle/syringe, Outreach and methadone access programs

Langton Centre

  • Provides care and treatment for people with drug and alcohol problems
  • The service includes comprehensive assessment, detoxification, maintenance, counseling, therapy, needle and syringe program and an outreach service

ADAHPT

  • ADAHPT is part of the AIDS Dementia and HIV Psychiatry Service (ADAHPS), and provides multidisciplinary statewide tertiary outreach for people with HIV and complex needs
  • Services include development of treatment and support plans, education and training, assistance with diagnosis where dual or triple diagnoses are likely and provision of resource materials on ADC and HIV psychiatric conditions

Sydney Artificial Eyes

  • Manufacture of custom made artificial eyes

Allied Health

  • The services of Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital are supported by dietetics, hand therapy, a medical library, pharmacy, physiotherapy, radiology, social work and orthoptics.

The Hospital is easily accessible by all forms of public transport with two railway stations within 100 metres and multiple bus routes. It is also within short walking distance from Circular Quay.

Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital is affiliated with both the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney. The Save Sight Institute, which is located on campus, houses the University of Sydney Department of Clinical Ophthalmology and the Lions NSW Eye Bank. The Save Sight Institute is at the leading edge in teaching and research in eye health.
