Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital's Clinical Services Building was completed in 1995, and contains four separate ward areas on levels one and two of the building.

The wards are bright and modern, and consist of a combination of single and four-bed bays. All rooms have ensuite facilities. Single rooms are allocated to those patients with specific medical conditions, and are not available on request.

Operations are performed five days a week, with emergency procedures being performed at other times.

Admissions and bookings information

Ward One East

Ward One East is located on the eastern side of the Clinical Services Building, level one.

The ward consists of 29 beds, and specialises in caring for adults and children over the age of 12 months with ophthalmic conditions.

Patients are admitted to the ward as either elective procedure patients, via the Emergency Department, or are transferred to the ward from another health care facility.

The ward is managed by the nurse unit manager (NUM) with medical staff; nursing staff including clinical nurse specialists, a clinical nurse consultant, registered nurses, and a community liaison nurse; social workers; clerical staff and domestic staff also provide care and expertise to patients on the ward.

Ward One West/Day Procedure Unit

Ward One West is located on the western side of the Clinical Services Building on level one. The Day Procedure Unit is located on the third floor of the Clinical Services Building. Both areas are managed as one unit.

The service is divided into a 22 bed short stay surgical unit, which operates Monday to Friday, and a 10 bed Day Procedure Unit. The ward is used to manage ophthalmic patients and patients admitted for day surgery and day of surgery procedures. Day surgery and day of surgery patients are admitted to this unit prior to their transfer to the operating suite.

In this unit, day of surgery and day surgery patients may be admitted for general surgery or for ophthalmic, orthopaedic, or ear nose and throat procedures.

Day surgery patients are admitted and discharged on the same day. Day of surgery patients are admitted for a procedure on the same day that the procedure will take place, and may require overnight or longer accommodation in hospital following their operation.

Admissions may be elective patients, patients admitted via emergency, or patients transferred from another health facility.

The nurse unit manager is responsible for management of the ward with medical staff; nursing staff including clinical nurse specialists, a clinical nurse consultant, registered nurses, and a community liaison nurse; social workers; clerical staff and domestic staff provide care and expertise to patients.

Ward Two East

Ward Two East is located in the Eastern side of the Clinical Services Building, on level two.

The 29-bed ward caters for a combination of specialities including medical, surgical and orthopaedic patients, high dependency patients and patients undergoing drug and alcohol detoxification.

The four-bed High Dependency Unit is used for patients requiring more specialised medical and nursing care, such as patients experiencing chest pain or after some surgical procedures. This is not an Intensive Care Unit, but offers a higher level of monitoring.

The four drug and alcohol beds are used for patients requiring detoxification who also have other medical conditions. Drug and alcohol patients are admitted to the hospital from the Langton Centre.

Medical patients are only admitted to the ward from the Emergency Department, and orthopaedic patients may be elective patients, or patients admitted to the hospital via the Emergency Department.

The ward is managed by the nurse unit manager. Medical staff; nursing staff including a clinical nurse consultant, a clinical nurse educator, registered nurses, and a community liaison nurse; social workers/welfare officers; physiotherapists, clerical staff and domestic staff provide care and expertise to patients.

Ward Two West/Hand Unit

Ward Two West is located on the western side of the Clinical Services Building on the second floor.

The 23 bed unit is divided in use between a 10 bed Hand Unit for medical and surgical treatment of patients with hand injuries/diseases, and a 13 bed unit for general surgical, medical and ear, nose and throat patients.

Admissions to the Hand Unit and the general unit are made by elective patients, patients admitted via emergency, or patients transferred from another health facility.

The ward also co-ordinates a hand clinic, which is an outpatient service of the Hand Unit.

The Unit is managed by the nurse unit manager, and supported by medical staff; nursing staff including a clinical nurse specialist, clinical nurse educator and registered nurses; hand therapists and physiotherapists; social workers; clerical staff and domestic staff.
