The Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital Radiology Department is located on the Ground Floor of the Clinical Services Building , near the entrance to the lifts. The Department contains two X-Ray rooms, one of which is for fluoroscopic studies.
The Department is open from 8.30am to 11.30pm every day. After 4.30pm and at weekends, a sole Radiographer provides a limited service, which is restricted to the Emergency Department, Wards and Operating Suites. An on-call service is provided out of hours for emergency situations.
All internal medical imaging requests are to be made on a Sydney Hospital Request Form (125A), which must be completed in full. The Request Form should include a clinical history and a justification of the examinations requested. The Request must be written and signed by a qualified Doctor or Intern from the Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital campus. The signature must be legible or printed so the name is clear.
A patient sticker should be attached to the form as it shows other relevant details such as the VMO name and financial classifications.
General Radiography
General radiography is carried out as soon as practicable without appointments, with priority given to emergency situations. Operating Theatre radiography has priority and wherever possible, Radiology should be notified in advance if a service is required. The Operating Suite also has a smaller Hand Image Intensifier, which is only to be used by Hand Unit VMOs and Radiographers.
Special Examinations
Appointments need to be made for special examinations including IVPs and fluoroscopic examinations of the GI tract.
Radiology commissioned a multi-slice CT Scanner in February 2004. All CT scan examinations for Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital patients are now performed on-site in Radiology.
Please contact Radiology for information about specific patient preparations for these examinations. Requests should be initiated by a VMO or a Registrar.
Mobile Radiography
Mobile radiography will generally only be performed on patients whose medical condition does not permit their transport to the Department. It is not undertaken due to nursing or porter shortages. When undertaking mobile radiography, consideration must also be given to the irradiation of other patients and staff.
Radiologist
Currently, a Radiologist is available onsite in Radiology each afternoon from 1:00pm Monday to Friday for Radiology reporting and consultation with Medical staff. A Radiologist is available 24/7 for urgent Radiology reports. Contact is via the Switchboard.
Picture Archive Communication System (PACS)
A fully filmless PACS environment was realised in July 2005.
All Radiology images are now stored and viewed digitally.
Patients may have a copy of their images free of charge on a CD ROM. If images are requested to be supplied on film instead of CD ROM, a film copy fee will apply.
Private films should be returned to patients when they leave the hospital.
Imaging Procedures not performed at Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital
Imaging procedures not undertaken at Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital , such as MRI, Ultrasounds and Isotope scans, must be allocated an authority number. The authority number should be written on the request form. For more information about the authority number, telephone Radiology.
MRI requests may be ordered after consultation from a VMO and notification to the Director of Clinical Services. The Prince of Wales Hospital at Randwick (Ext 22310) should be consulted first for an appointment. Copies of the Prince of Wales specific request forms are available in Radiology.
