Acute Pain Service
|
|
Comparison between the effectiveness of commencing epidural
infusion analgesia intra-operatively to commencing the infusion
postoperatively. |
Acute Pain Service, Port Kembla Hospital. |
Negus B,
Brown D, Markocic S. |
Two recurrent problems with post-operative epidural infusions
are inadequate analgesia and hypotension. Concerns with
increased patient discomfort and prolonged recovery ward stays
instigated this study into the benefit of earlier commencement of
the epidural infusion, ie during surgery in comparison to
commencement in the recovery ward. |
|
Comparison between morphine and morphine and ketamine for
total
knee replacements. |
Acute Pain Service, Port Kembla Hospital, |
Jeffs
C,
Markocic S. |
The study investigates the post operative total knee replacement
pain management benefits of administering Ketamine in addition
to Morphine. |
|
Double-blind, double-dummy, randomised, parallel-arm equivalence
(non-inferiority) study comparing hydromorphone hydrochloride
extended-release capsules to MS Contin tablets, dosed at a ratio
of 1:7.5, in cancer or non-cancer patients with a history of
moderate to severe pain. |
Chronic Pain Service, Port Kembla Hospital. |
Bashford G. |
The purpose of this research is to compare the safety and
effectiveness of a long-acting (extended-release) hydromorphone
to long-acting morphine in patients with long-standing moderate
to severe cancer or non-cancer pain. |
|
A
double-blind, randomised, parallel group study to compare the
efficacy, safety, and tolerability of OxyContin taken in
combination with Gabapentin, versus placebo with Gabapentin, for
the treatment of moderate to severe neuropathic pain in patients
with diabetes mellitus. |
Chronic Pain Service, Port Kembla Hospital. |
Bashford G. |
Selected patients have experienced moderate to severe
neuropathic pain due to diabetic peripheral neuropathy. The
study aims to identify whether OxyContin, when taken in addition
to Gabapentin, is a useful treatment for neuropathic pain. |

A
comparison of bioelectrical impedance with dual energy x-ray
absorptiometry for the determination of body fat in overweight
and obese children aged 5-9 years. |
Nutrition Department, The Wollongong Hospital. |
Nowland A,
Cleary J.
|
This study aims to compare assessments of percentage body fat
obtained using a field method, bioelectrical impedance
assessment (BIA) to the reference method, dual energy
x-ray absorptiometry in children. It is a sub study to the project: “The efficacy of a physical
activity skill-development program and parent-centred dietary
modification program for overweight and obese children”.
The results
of this sub study will then be used to validate the
data collected using the BIA on changes
in body fat of children
that have participated
in this intervention study.

Ventilation perfusion SPECT: should ventilation perfusion
imaging be routinely performed using SPECT? |
University of Newcastle. |
Fenwick J. |
The aim of this study is to determine if ventilation perfusion
imaging should be routinely performed using single photon
emission computed tomography (SPECT) in
the diagnosis of
pulmonary embolism.
|
|
Accuracy and prognostic value of myocardial perfusion
scintigraphy when compared to coronary angiography and clinical
outcome. |
Department of Nuclear Medicine, Nepean Hospital. |
Chan WL. |
The project is evaluating the diagnostic accuracy of myocardial
perfusion imaging
(for detection / assessment of coronary artery disease) by
comparison with the gold standard coronary angiography, and to
assess its prognostic value by correlation with clinical
outcomes. The project has potential significance in that the results may permit more appropriate and selective
use of myocardial perfusion imaging in the future.
|
|
Evaluation of immediate post stress (exercise or
pharmacological) gated single photon
emission computed tomography (SPECT) compared to standard post stress
gated stress imaging in myocardial perfusion imaging. |
Department of Nuclear Medicine, Wollongong Hospital. |
Elison B,
Arvela O,
Chan WL,
Shen L,
Harvey S.
|
Conventional gated SPECT cardiac imaging
for evaluation of left
ventricular wall motion and left ventricular wall thickening
(function)
is routinely performed at approximately 30 minutes
after injection of the radioisotope,
as part of myocardial
perfusion scanning for detection / assessment of coronary artery
disease. Conventional gated SPECT studies evaluate left
ventricular function and wall motion in a more ‘resting’ state
rather than
a true post stress (exercise) state.
Evaluating a true stress (exercise) gated SPECT study
will improve the specificity of this investigation,
notwithstanding the fact that there are well published
sensitivity / specificity data regarding myocardial perfusion
scanning utilising the conventional gated SPECT studies, and the myocardial perfusion scanning
should identify ischaemia in a direct sense (abnormal
wall motion post exercise) and an indirect sense by evaluating
areas of ischaemia in the myocardium, thereby markedly improving
sensitivity and specificity.
