Health Promotion Service - What is Health Promotion

Health promotion aims to improve health at a population level, rather than working with individuals at risk for specific diseases.

Health is more than the absence of disease - it also includes the physical, social and mental well-being of individuals and communities. Health promotion work therefore addresses social, economic, educational, environmental, political, behavioural and other non-medical factors to improve the health of populations, while recognising that not everyone can achieve the same level of good health.

Health promotion uses a combination of methods and approaches (eg legislation, policy development, environmental change, community development and education) to improve the health of populations living within their given environment. Local communities are involved in this process.
