The Albion Street Centre library has over 15 years experience in collecting, organising and accessing information on HIV and has one of the most comprehensive collections of material in Australia. The library is the NSW State Reference Centre for HIV information and is also an UNAIDS Information Support Centre, specialising in the medical, psychological, nutritional and treatment aspects of HIV.

By collecting, organising and disseminating HIV information from around the world, and enabling access to this information through print and electronic formats the library supports the Centre’s aims of:

  • Providing optimal and comprehensive treatment, education and prevention services for persons affected by HIV
  • Being responsive to the needs of the general community and the changing focus of the epidemic

The library is one of five libraries in the NSW HIV Library Network (HALN), which provides access to a wider range of resources for both internal and external users, as well as minimising the duplication of information through effective resource sharing. The network’s achievements include:

  • Development of a thesaurus
  • Creation of a combined database. The HALN database was started in 1990, and it contains references to journal articles, conference papers, research reports and unpublished materials covering a wide range of subjects concerning HIV. This database is now published by RMIT as the HIVA Database and released quarterly on the AUSTHEALTH compilation CD ROM
  • Professional collaboration and networking. Members meet monthly and have a cooperative agreement for the exchange of information between member libraries

The Albion Street Centre library has many resources in print and electronic formats including:

  • Books
  • CD ROMs
