An important feature of the Albion Street Centre’s international work is that its staff have experience working in clinical settings in Australia and in developing countries. Staff are comfortable and competent working in a range of contexts and in settings where resources to treat and support people with infectious diseases may be limited.
From 1997 to 2002, the Albion Street Centre was engaged in the implementation of the Thailand-Australia HIV/AIDS Ambulatory Care Project at Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Hospital on the outskirts of Bangkok. The project established a fully integrated ambulatory care model at the Hospital for the delivery of optimal clinical care to patients with HIV/AIDS. The project has had a long lasting impact on the provision of care for people with HIV/AIDS provided by the hospital and led to the establishment of a regional HIV/AIDS training centre at the hospital.
In an evaluation of the project, counterparts concluded that “because the Albion Street Centre technical advisers were current practitioners of the subjects they taught, they were teaching current methods and that they were credible in the eyes of the Thai trainees.”
