TACHIN – Thai Australian Collaboration in HIV Nutrition (2005-2008)

TACHIN is a collaboration between the Thai Red Cross, Institute of Nutrition, Mahidol University and the Albion Street Centre. A three year initiative funded by AusAID, this project is focussed on strengthening nutritional care in HIV treatment and support in Thailand. It includes a broad range of care and prevention activities.

SafeHandS – Network for Health Care Worker Safety across the Asia Pacific Region (2005 – 2008)

SafeHandS is an initiative funded by AusAID to develop a ‘virtual’ network for health care worker safety for the Asia Pacific region. The aim of SafeHandS is to promote the following:
• sharing of information between health care workers and institutions about health care worker safety
• policy development and program implementation to improve health care workers' safety
• optimal care for people with blood borne viruses (especially HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C) and other communicable diseases
• practical steps to deal with issues of stigma and discrimination which might otherwise act against optimum health outcomes.

PASHIP – PNG Australia Sexual Health Improvement Program (2007 - 2012)

PASHIP is an initiative of the Governments of Australia and Papua New Guinea. A number of Australian NGOs are being supported by AusAID to work with their PNG partners to develop capacity in the provision of sexual health services.

The Albion Street is a member of the consortium known as the 4 A’s headed up by the Anglican Board of Mission. The two PNG partners in the consortium are Anglicare Stop AIDS and the Anglican Health Service.

Infection Control Toolkit (2006 – 2007)

The Infection Control Toolkit was developed by the Albion Street Centre for the Western Pacific Regional Office of WHO and follows on from previous infection control work carried out by the Centre in the Pacific region. The Toolkit includes a comprehensive mechanism to assess current infection control practices and a manual to guide the implementation and maintenance of appropriate infection control practices.

Emergency Regional Support to Address the Outbreak of Severe Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) (2005 - 2007)

For the Asian Development Bank a consultancy to reinforce infection control capacities in the Pacific Island region in order to minimise vulnerability to SARS and other emerging infectious diseases. Conducted over six months, the majority of Pacific Island Countries and Territories were engaged in the project.

Indonesia HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care Project (2002 – 2007)

A collaboration between the Governments of Indonesia and Australia. The Albion Street Centre was especially involved in the final two years of the project when it provided capacity building support to two Indonesian hospitals – RSPI in Jakarta and RS Wahidin in Makassar.

China-Australia Xinjiang HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care Project (2002 – 2007)

This project was a major initiative between the Government of Australia and the People’s Republic of China, and is the largest health project funded through Australia’s official aid program. The purpose of the project was to increase the capacity of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to respond to the HIV/AIDS epidemic with effective multi-sectoral prevention and care programs.

The Albion Street Centre was the key technical partner for care, support and treatment in the project.

Thailand-Australia HIV/AIDS Ambulatory Care Project (1997 – 2002)

A collaboration between the Bamrasnaradura Infectious Diseases Hospital in Bangkok and the Albion Street Centre supported by the Government of Australia and the Royal Thai Government.

A fully integrated ambulatory care model was developed and implemented for the delivery of optimal care to patients with HIV/AIDS and the support of families Other significant outcomes included improved human resource development, in particular a greater use of counselling, improved health care worker safety, increased access to and availability of health education and information services, administrative and organisational structure and development, and the development of a National and Regional Training Centre in HIV/AIDS care.

An independent evaluation of the project commissioned by AusAID found the project has achieved significant success, and was extremely valuable. An impact evaluation of the project was conducted in 2005 and is available through AusAID

Capacity-building for HIV/AIDS Care and Support in the Mekong Subregion (2000 – 2002)

Implemented in Viet Nam and Lao PDR, this project supported government agencies to build capacity in care, support and treatment. In Viet Nam pilot activities were conducted to improve system efficiency and effectiveness of the patient and information flow systems, in particular discharge planning and referral. In Lao PDR, pilot activities focussed on improving infection control and counselling skills and procedures in a major city hospital. The project was implemented in conjunction with the University of New South and funded by AusAID.

Guidance Note on Health Care Worker Safety (2001-2002)

The Albion Street Centre prepared a Guidance Note on Health Care Worker Safety for East Asia to engage health care workers, health service administrators, government policy personnel and local World Bank health staff in the development of operational guidelines. This activity was funded by the World Bank and the guidance note is available from the World Bank.

Development of a Conceptual Framework for the Provision for Antiretroviral Therapy for HIV Positive Patients in India (2002)

Consultancy was conducted as part of a World Bank mission to examine the provision of the HIV antiretroviral therapy in India.

China Health VII Disease Prevention Project (1997 – 1999)

A World Bank project in which the Albion Street Centre designed and implemented the health promotion component, in collaboration with the Australian Centre for Health Promotion, Sydney University. This also included the development and implementation of training on HIV/STI interventions with sex workers.

Authorship of HIV/AIDS Issues and Trends Paper (1997)

Staff at the Centre reviewed Australia’s role in HIV/AIDS in overseas countries and recommended future directions for AusAID.

India-Australia HIV/AIDS and Health Promotion Project (1998)

Was undertaken in collaboration with the Australian Centre for Health Promotion, Sydney University.

Australia-Fiji In-Country Training Project (1999)

Through this AusAID project a training program was designed and delivered to improve the infection control and counselling skills of nurses in Fiji.

Other Consultancies

The Albion Street Centre is regularly contracted by external agencies to conduct consultancies related to HIV and other blood borne viruses. These agencies include UNAIDS, WHO, World Bank, World Food Programme, Family Health International, Save the Children, Burnet Institute, AusAID, Ford Foundation, UNICEF and the European Community.
