Graduate Certificate in HIV

This course is of particular interest and value to people who are or have worked in the field of HIV and who would like to gain a formal qualification from an Australian university or to those who have some prior involvement in health activities and would like to expand their experience into the HIV field. Australians seeking to work overseas in the field of HIV will find this course well tailored to their needs.

The Graduate Certificate in HIV provides students with a broad overview of the nature of infectious diseases (HIV and hepatitis C), and an understanding of reproductive health care with an emphasis on developing countries and skills related to the practical management of people affected by and/or living with HIV. It also develops skills in organisational management and reflective practice.

This Graduate Certificate is an excellent entry point to further study in programmes such as a Masters degree in Nursing, Public Heath or Population Health all offered at the University of Wollongong.

The course is taught both on the campus of the University of Wollongong and at the Albion Street Centre in Sydney. Modules are completed as part of the University’s distance education programme. The Graduate Certificate in HIV programme may be completed over the course of either one or two semesters (six or twelve months) and will be available in each semester (February and July).

The Graduate Certificate can also be offered to students based outside Australia as part of a Contract offered to overseas governments or institutions. The Course will be provided by face-to-face training in specific blocks of time supplemented by distance education. Minimum cohorts of 25 students are needed for any contractual programme.

Other institutions or organisations such as Area Health Services or Non-government Organisations may also wish to consider contractual arrangements with the University for group enrolment of their staff/personnel.

The course is structured around the completion of two Core Subjects which must be completed by all students and a choice of two out of four available Elective Subjects.

Introduction to Infectious Diseases: HIV and Hepatitis C

This core subject has two modules:

  • HIV Introductory Course: covering the pathophysiology of HIV infection and disease, transmission, prevention, clinical trials, care and counselling
  • Hepatitis C Introductory Course: epidemiology, transmission, prevention, treatment, clinical trials, psychosocial issues and counselling related to hepatitis C

Reproductive Health in Developing Countries

Students will examine social, cultural and behavioural factors that impact on women and children in developing countries and assess evidence-based practices which prevent or solve reproductive and sexual health problems. They will develop skills in conducting needs assessments and the development and delivery of health programmes in resource poor settings.

Elective Subjects

Students must complete one module from each of the two elective groups A and B. The courses will be arranged during each of the first and second semesters of 2006.

Social Foundations of Public Health

Introduces students to theories and concepts from the social sciences, such as community and social capital, necessary for the understanding and analysis of public health issues these include issues such as environmental influences on health, health inequalities and the questions of gender, culture and human rights.

Health Promotion

Students are introduced to the concept of health promotion and how it applies in settings such as health services, workplaces, schools and communities. Theoretical issues of behavioural change and public policy development in the field of health promotion will be studied.

Nursing and Health Management

This subject encourages participants to consider their own style of interacting with others in manager/subordinate roles, with the intention of assisting them to gain insights into their strengths and weaknesses as a manager or as a subordinate. The subject also covers material related to important management issues such as conflict management; the management of change and performance management of staff.

Reflective Practice

This subject develops or enhances personal and intellectual skills necessary to be a reflective health practitioner. The aim is to assist people to develop a critical self-awareness of their own place in, and impact upon, the health system and other people within it, as well as developing important skills related to the identification and locating of an evidence base for their practice.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students who have completed relevant courses at the University of Wollongong or the Albion Street Centre may earn credit points towards the completion of this qualification. Up to six out of the required 24 credit points required for completion may be awarded on this basis.

Fee Structure

The fee for this Graduate Certificate programme is AUD$3720.00 for 24 Credit Points. Lower fees apply where prior learning credits have been awarded.

Language Requirements

Overseas students require a proficiency in Academic English at IELTS 6.5 as a minimum.

THE CENTRE FOR THE ADVANCEMENT OF INTERNATIONAL HEALTH

The Centre for the Advancement of International Health is a joint initiative of the Faculty of Health and Behavioural Sciences at the University of Wollongong and the Albion Street Centre.
