Albion Street Centre
The Albion Street Centre has been prominent in the HIV/AIDS field in NSW since 1985.  It is a multidisciplinary centre for HIV and hepatitis C clinical management, counselling, research and education and has expertise in infection control and health care worker safety. Staff includes psychologists, doctors, educators, nutritionists, pharmacists and nurses.

The Centre strives to be responsive to the needs of the general community and the changing focus of the HIV and hepatitis C epidemics.  The staff are committed to personal client-focussed care and support and maintaining an accessible, confidential and holistic service.

The Albion Street Centre Education Unit is committed to offering the best in professional staff development and training to meet the needs of people who work in clinical care, health management, health promotion, education and welfare. Courses are conducted by experienced clinicians and educators who are recognised experts in their fields.

If you are unable to attend a course please inform us immediately and a transfer to the next available course will be made. Refunds can only be issued if requested ten (10) working days prior to the course. Substitutions for courses can be made – please advise us accordingly. If a course is cancelled, refunds or transfers to other courses will be made.

To register, fill in the Application Form and return it with your payment, either by post or fax (credit card only). Your application must include payment.

Course placement will be allocated in order of receipt of application forms. A confirmation letter and receipt will be sent when the application is registered, provided the eligibility requirements, if necessary for the course, are met.

All courses are held at the Albion Street Centre unless otherwise advised.

We reserve the right to alter any arrangements, including cancellation of courses. Course fees include all course materials, morning and afternoon teas. Lunch is not provided. Certificates of Attendance will be issued on full completion of each course.

Introduction to HIV, A Course for Everybody

One day course providing a basic overview of current HIV/AIDS information.

Topics covered include: HIV/AIDS transmission, information about HIV disease, prevention of transmission, psychosocial issues and HIV/AIDS from a personal perspective.

Aimed at all those wanting an introduction to HIV/AIDS. Appropriate for administration staff, secretaries and education officers whose work may involve some interaction with HIV positive clients including non-clinical hospital staff.

HIV/AIDS Introductory Course for Health Care Workers


Two day course providing an overview of current HIV/AIDS information for health professionals working in a clinical setting.

Topics covered include: pathophysiology of HIV infection and disease, transmission, prevention, clinical trials, care, psychosocial issues and referrals.

Aimed at health care workers and allied health professionals such as social workers, occupational therapists, psychologists, physiotherapists and welfare officers who have an interest in HIV or who are preparing to work with HIV positive clients.

Pre-requisite: A basic understanding of HIV disease and the medical terminology used in HIV/AIDS.

Dates: 14 - 15 September

Hepatitis for Health Care Workers

This two-day course provides an overview of current information on viral hepatitis focusing on hepatitis C. It is suitable for health and allied health workers from clinics, youth health facilities, Needle and Syringe Programs, Juvenile Justice and other settings working with clients who are at risk of, or are infected with blood borne virus diseases.

Topics covered include: epidemiology, transmission, prevention, testing, disease processes and prognosis, current treatments, clinical trials, self–help strategies for clients, psychosocial issues, counselling and referrals.

Train the Trainer for Workers in HIV/AIDS and Sexual Health

This three day workshop provides participants with the skills to plan, develop and implement their own education and training programs.

Topics covered include: adult learning, preparing and planning a session, presentation techniques, barriers to HIV and sexual health education, managing group dynamics and evaluation. Participants will have the opportunity to practise the skills they have acquired during the workshop.

Prerequisites: A demonstrated knowledge of HIV, hepatitis and STI transmission and prevention

HIV/AIDS in Developing Countries

HIV/AIDS has had the greatest impact in countries with poor social and welfare infrastructures including developing countries. Understanding HIV/AIDS as a development issue is critical to building effective partnerships at all levels between ‘rich’ and ‘poor’ countries.

This one day course introduces participants to the major topics and issues around HIV/AIDS in developing countries.

Topics covered include: HIV/AIDS and development, strategies for resource poor settings, employment opportunities, and the global response to HIV/AIDS.

Prerequisite: A demonstrated knowledge of HIV, hepatitis and STI transmission and prevention

HIV and Hepatitis C Pre & Post Test Counselling

A four day workshop designed specifically for counsellors and health care professionals who will be providing pre and post HIV/Hep C test counselling. This is a highly interactive, skills-based workshop focussing on the immediate emotional and psychosocial responses to HIV/Hep C testing. Other issues to be addressed will include occupational exposures and suicide risk assessment.

Includes case discussions, sexual health assessment and micro skills practice in small groups.

Prerequisite: Basic counselling skills and an introduction to HIV/AIDS course or equivalent knowledge level.

Conditionally registered psychologists: this course has been assessed as suitable for workshop supervision hours for the NSW Psychologists’ Registration Board.

Suicide Risk Assessment and Management

This course seeks to provide the participants with an awareness of the predisposing risk factors for suicide in both HIV and non-HIV infected clients, as well as to provide training in practical assessment and management techniques. Participants will learn how to conduct a structured therapeutic interview to assess suicide risk as well as immediate management techniques and treatment interventions.

This course is designed for primary health care staff including nurses, doctors and counsellors. Whilst HIV issues are discussed, the course material is applicable to non-HIV related client care.

This course is suitable for NSW Psychologists’ Registration training for Intern Psychologists.

HIV Medication Management

A one-day course for pharmacists, nurses and other clinicians, designed to provide an overview of treatment options and treatment related issues in the management of HIV.

Topics covered include: antiretroviral drugs, prevention and treatment of HIV related opportunistic infections, management of side effects, drug interactions, commencing treatment, treatment breaks, adherence to therapy.

Prerequisite: A basic knowledge of HIV and the medical terminology used in HIV/AIDS.

Dates: 9 November

Management of Needle-stick Injuries and Other Exposures to Blood-Borne Pathogens

 

A two day workshop which provides an overview of the management of needle-stick injuries and other exposures to blood and body substances that could potentially contain blood-borne pathogens such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.

Topics covered include: risk assessment, protocols for post exposure management, prophylaxis, testing, documentation, pre-test counselling (overview) and policy development.

The seminar is aimed at nurses, doctors, social workers, psychologists and managers who provide advice to health care workers after a needle-stick injury (or other exposure) and/or those developing policy.

THE SECOND GROUP OF COURSES COME UNDER A HEADING: INFECTION CONTROL COURSES
 

Introduction to Infection Control Nursing

A one day course designed especially for nurses who are beginning practitioners in the field of infection control or who are required to take some infection control responsibilities in the course of their work.

Topics covered include: the principles of infection control; the role of the infection control nurse; staff health; waste management; policy and programs; networking and resources available.

Infection Control for Cleaners of Health Care Facilities

A half day (morning) workshop for cleaners of health care facilities. Provides an overview of current infection control procedures related to cleaning. Topics covered include: standard precautions, preventing transmission of blood-borne infections (in particular hepatitis B & C and HIV), waste management, cleaning blood spills and disposing of incorrectly discarded sharps. All information is delivered at a basic and easy to understand level.

Introduction to Infection Control for Dental Assistants

A one day workshop especially designed for dental assistants. Provides an overview of current infection control procedures.

Topics covered include: principles of infection control, introductory microbiology and immunology, processing instruments and equipment, staff health and management of needle stick injuries.

THE THIRD GROUP OF COURSES COME UNDER A HEADING: NUTRITION COURSES:
 
Nutrition in the Developing World

This two day workshop is designed to assist in preparing health professionals to undertake nutrition related project work in resource limited countries. This interactive workshop will enable participants to enhance their skills in nutrition assessment; program planning and implementation skills in the context of resource limited settings.

Prerequisite: undergraduate degree in a health discipline which included at least one nutrition subject.

NB Suitable for participants considering post-graduate studies e.g. MIPH.

Nutrition, Hepatitis C & Injecting Drug Use
 
A one day workshop providing an overview of the impact of injecting drug use and related diseases on nutritional status. Practical strategies for enhancing nutritional status including healthy eating and symptom management will be discussed and complementary therapies reviewed.
 
This workshop is suitable for needle and syringe program workers, nurses, social workers, drug and alcohol workers and those who work in liver disease and/or infectious diseases.

Food Provision for Vulnerable Groups     
 
This one day interactive workshop will provide participants with knowledge and strategies to assist vulnerable clients to improve their nutritional status through food provision. Participants will develop their knowledge of basic principles of food services & nutrition, nutritional considerations for vulnerable groups, including menu planning, enhancing nutrition quality within a limited budget and food safety.

 

The workshop is suitable for health & social workers and food preparation staff in organisations providing meals and/or food services to the community, including people with HIV, the homeless, those in rehabilitation programs & hostels.
