The Albion Street Centre Research Unit has been actively involved in research since the Centre's inception in 1985. It has ongoing research interests in a number of areas relating to Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), hepatitis C and sexual health.
The main areas of current research include clinical trials evaluating
investigational new drugs as well as nutritional and behavioural aspects
relating to both HIV and hepatitis C infections.
A number of international multicentre trials for investigational new
drugs and collaborative studies with the National Centre in HIV
Epidemiology and Clinical research have been, and will continue to be
undertaken.
In-house studies are initiated by staff members from the Centre, and
most of these are conducted in collaboration with other hospital sites
and researchers. A number of these studies have been presented at major
conferences and published in peer-reviewed journals.
The unit is actively involved in teaching and supervision of
postgraduate students from the University of Sydney and the University
of Wollongong.
Some staff members have secondary academic appointments with local universities and maintain ongoing research collaborations with these institutions.
