What do we do?
Part of the responsibilities of the Public Health Unit are defined by the NSW Public Health Act. We work with health care providers and other agencies to monitor and intervene in public health issues and research ways to improve public health. We also investigate complaints from members of the public concerning a range of health related issues.
The Public Health Unit consists of the Director and five work teams: Infectious Diseases, Immunisation, Environmental Health, Epidemiology & Research, and Administration. The Epidemiology and Research team comprises the Head of Cancer Control, three epidemiologists, a strategic research manager and research staff. Senior staff also supervise postgraduate students and trainees undertaking work towards higher degrees in public health or epidemiology.
We liaise with local councils, general practitioners, hospitals and other health care services, pathology laboratories, childcare centres, schools, food premises, universities, other government agencies and members of the community.
