Getting healthy is only a phone call away

At the Wollongong Tennis Club today, Mr Terry Clout, Chief Executive of the South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Service launched the Get Healthy Illawarra campaign and the Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service.

Get Healthy Illawarra is supported by Dr Andrew Dalley, CEO of The Illawarra Division of General Practice; Dr Chris Darling, Manager Safety, Health & Risk, BlueScope Steel; Susie Elelman, WIN TV; Ben Marsh, General Manager, Illawarra Mercury and Clr Sandra McCarthy, Mayor Kiama Council.

Terry Clout, Chief Executive of SESIH, says data shows that obesity levels in the Illawarra are much higher than in the remainder of NSW. Many Illawarra residents also smoke and drink at risky levels and just under half of residents over 16 years aren’t getting enough physical activity.

“All of these factors will lead to increases in hospitalisation for a wide range of illnesses, including raised blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, some cancers, and other illnesses,” Mr Clout said.

The Get Healthy Illawarra campaign will run over four months and is designed to help the local community to tackle a number of major health issues and be aware of major health risks.

The campaign includes a free telephone coaching service (on 1300 806 258) that will provide advice regarding personal fitness and nutrition and referral to other vital health services such as the Quitline.

Terry Clout has committed to lose 15 kilograms and improve his health and fitness.

“As a part of the health system I think it is important we set an example to avoid preventable illnesses such a heart disease, and some cancers. This program has the potential to extend lives and reduce illness in our community,” he said.

“Phone counselling by health care professionals is an innovative and effective means of encouraging the community to improve their health and well-being,” said Dr Andrew Dalley, CEO of The Illawarra Division of General Practice.

“This strategy of disease prevention lead by SESIH is not only highly accessible to local communities but particularly welcome in the Illawarra where many residents are at risk of longer term illness,” he said.

“BlueScope Steel is committing to promote the Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service to its staff and is challenging other companies to come on board and work toward improving the health of the Illawarra workforce,” said Dr Chris Darling, Manager Safety, Health & Risk, BlueScope Steel.

Ms Susie Elelman, WIN Television said the Get Healthy coaching service has real merit, not only because it is free, but the 10 follow-up calls from the qualified health consultants will make the difference in people sticking to their health goals.

“Today we challenge Illawarra businesses and community representatives to promote the Get Healthy Information and Coaching Service and for everyone to take a good look our own health and fitness levels,” said Mr Clout, Chief Executive, SESIH.
