Test pill could be libido saviour

Many women who use an oral contraceptive pill complain of a reduced libido, so researchers at the Royal Hospital for Women are taking part in an international study to determine if a new pill type will enhance sexual function.

Up to 10 per cent of oral contraceptive users report a noticeable decrease of libido, and in some instances women choose to use alternative types of contraceptions. It is believed the reduced libido is caused by a reduction in free, bioactive testosterone.

This new pill has undergone an earlier clinical trial, in which it appeared to have a reduced impact on free and total testosterone levels. This study will consider if these decreases have an influence on sexual functions.

The Royal Hospital for Women is seeking females aged 18 to 50 years, who are in a sexual relationship and currently using an oral contraception they believe has led to libido complaints for at least one month.

The randomised study will run for 24 weeks and participants will be required to make six clinic visits during the period for general check-ups and questionnaires.
