A free photo voice workshop will begin in late August bringing together
mothers of young children and pregnant women of culturally and linguistically
diverse communities (CALD).
Multicultural Health has funded the program to offer women feeling isolated an
opportunity to meet other women, learn the technique of telling personal stories
through photography in words and pictures, as well as have access to health
professionals and support in a relaxed setting.
The Royal Hospital for Women is facilitating the six-session program, which will
operate from the Deli Women & Children’s Centre in Mascot. It follows the
previous success of an art therapy workshop run by the Hospital from 2004-06.
The Hospital has found that outreach programs are a positive way to reach women
in an informal setting.
This photo voice workshop will focus on connecting CALD women with relevant
services to ensure increased attendance of antenatal care and access to early
childhood services.
Diversity Health Coordinator Saulan Yin-Lo said many women who felt isolated
often had a poor health and wellness perspective.
"Women from diverse backgrounds can sometimes feel isolated and this can have an
impact on their mental and physical well being." Ms Yin-Lo said.
"Inviting CALD women into a workshop where they can break down communication
barriers and feel more relaxed among health practitioners can promote positive
health outcomes."
Women interested in participating should call 9382 3355 or 9382 6496 to register
for an information session on Thursday, 14 August.
