Giving premature babies a big voice

This Friday marks the second National Premmie Day and staff from Randwick’s Royal Hospital for Women are holding an afternoon tea in the newborn care centre for parents of premature babies.

Each year about 42,000 babies require some form of special nursing care and about half of those are premature births.

At the Royal Hospital for Women about 900 babies are treated at the newborn care centre, of which more than 500 require the most critical and intensive type of medical care.

National Premmie Day recognises these babies, who are battling to stay alive, and their parents.

The afternoon tea is an opportunity for parents and medical, nursing, midwifery and allied health staff to come together and celebrate the lives of the babies.

Editor’s Note: A photo opportunity is available at 3pm.
