04 July 2008 Gastroenteritis outbreak at Peakhurst aged care hostelSouth Eastern Sydney Illawarra Health is monitoring an outbreak of gastroenteritis in residents at a Peakhurst aged care hostel.Professor Mark Ferson, SESIH Director of Public Health, said that 40 people, including 36 residents and four staff at Roberts Lodge have been affected, with three of those people taken to St George Hospital. "The outbreak appears to be abating. The NSW Ambulance Service and the Australian Department of Health and Ageing are also working closely with hostel staff to help ensure that appropriate care is available to those who are affected and that there are no ongoing risks to residents," Professor Ferson said. "The main symptoms of the illness have been nausea and vomiting, generally lasting 1 to 2 days, and norovirus is thought to be the most likely agent." Professor Ferson said viral gastroenteritis was a common condition that is currently prevalent in the community and especially so in residential care settings. Control of outbreaks requires good cleaning of the facility including disinfection of contaminated surfaces, close attention to personal hygiene of residents, staff and visitors, and isolation of those who are ill. People can help protect themselves from common community-acquired infections by regularly practising good handwashing, including after using the bathroom and before preparing meals.
