Renal nurse receives top award

A St George and Sutherland Hospital renal nurse has made an incredible difference to renal patients and their families …. and her work has won national acclaim.

Dr Shelley Tranter, a Clinical Nurse Consultant in the Hospitals’ Renal Department has won the prestigious ‘Operation Angel’ Award at the 40th anniversary celebrations of Kidney Health Australia in Sydney, which was held recently.

Dr Tranter – who has 28 years experience in renal nursing – was one of 10 people from across the State, and one of 40 people Australia-wide, who were inducted into the ‘Operation Angel’ Awards.

The ‘Operation Angel’ Program seeks to recognise and promote the extraordinary work and care carried out by those who make a difference to people living with the burden of kidney disease.

Chronic kidney disease is responsible for the highest number of hospital visits to public hospitals in Australia. In 2005/2006 one third of all admissions to public hospitals were due to dialysis – this equates to 2000 admissions each day.

Director of St George and Sutherland Hospital Renal Service, Professor Mark Brown, said that Dr Tranter, who has a Doctorate in Nursing, was a dedicated Nephrology Nurse Consultant.

“Dr Tranter has made a great difference to patients and their families through conducting pre-dialysis education clinics and by providing continual support throughout their journey,” Professor Brown said.

“I have worked with Dr Tranter for 20 years and she is a great example to all other renal nurses,” he said.

Dr Tranter works closely with nursing staff to advance their professional development, including the facilitation of several Practice Development groups within the unit. These groups assist nursing staff to explore their practice in order to improve the delivery of care and patient outcomes.

She is also involved in the Haemodialysis Models of Care Project which focuses on changing the health care environment in haemodialysis by developing nursing and patient care practices.
