Fitness and fun for seniors made easier

Keeping healthy through regular exercise will become even easier for Illawarra seniors with South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Health (SESIH) Health Promotion Service set to launch Fun and fitness for over 55, a physical activity directory for older adults.

Health Promotion Program Coordinator, Polly Price, said most people know they should keep active but are often unsure of what type exercise may be suitable for them or where it is available.

“Images of kids playing sport or young people jogging along with their MP3 players are a regular sight in the media, but older adults who may no longer find the idea of pounding the pavement or playing high intensity sport all that appealing want to know how they too can keep healthy and active,” said Ms Price.

“We’ve compiled a physical activity directory for adults over 55 which is a quick and easy way to find an activity that is close by and suits their needs. It lists classes in the Illawarra suitable for all fitness levels including strength training, gentle exercise, aqua aerobics, Tai Chi and Pilates.”

“People who attend regular classes find it easier to keep motivated also find it a good way to make new friends, with many becoming just as much of a social group as an exercise class,” she said.

Ms Price also stressed the importance of older people keeping active to build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints to improve strength and coordination.

“Exercise can also generally reduce aches and pains, prevent stiff joints and improve balance and movement that can prevent falls in people over 55,” she said.

Directories are available through the SESIH Health Promotion Service or SESIH website at www.sesiahs.health.nsw.gov.au/publications/health_Promotion/index.asp
