Southern BST Network

The Southern BST Network stretches from Coffs Harbour in the north to Shoalhaven in the south. The hospitals that are included in this network and to which each trainee has the opportunity to experience working in are St George, Sutherland, Coffs Harbour, Wollongong, and Shoalhaven. Not only is the work and training varied and comprehensive in each of these hospitals, but their locations offer extremely interesting and varied life styles and takes advantage of all that is on offer when located on the eastern coast line.

There is the choice of St George or Wollongong Hospitals being the home base hospital for the trainee, however training is based not only at a local level but also at a network level.

Terms

Trainees have access to terms in cardiothoracic, neurosurgery, colorectal, upper GI, surgical specialties, breast/endocrine, general surgery, liver, plastic surgery and trauma . There are also terms in rural Coffs Harbour with its beautiful beaches and Shoalhaven, also well known for its beaches and national parks.

Rostering

Rostering is such that there can be negotiated time off for examination preparation, up to 6 weeks

Education Programs

With the newly formed Network has come a new education program. This program and those involved in organising it will be open to input from trainees, as to what the trainee would like incorporated into the program. Activities within the network program include journal club, laparoscopic and animal workshops. Also within each term each specialty has its own education activities that also involve the AMOs.

Trainees seconded away from their home base hospitals are not neglected and they will have opportunities to be involved in the network based education activities.
