Working in South Eastern Sydney Illawarra as a Medical Officer

South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Health (SESIAHS) extends from Sydney Harbour in the north to Durras on the south coast, offering a variety of work locations in both rural and metropolitan settings.

It is a great place to work as a medical officer and also a great place to live, whether you love city life or prefer a more laidback regional or rural lifestyle close to beaches, bush and breathtaking residential locations.

Our workforce of over 15,000 people provides health care to 17% of the total population of NSW (over 1.1 million NSW residents).

Our hospitals have world-class facilities and include:
  • Four principal referral hospitals: Prince of Wales Hospital & Community Health Services, The St George Hospital and Community Health Service, St Vincent's Hospital and Wollongong Hospital.
  • Three specialised referral hospitals: Sydney Children's Hospital, Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Women.
  • Three major district hospitals: The Sutherland Hospital and Community Health Service, Shoalhaven Hospital and Shellharbour Hospital.
  • Three small district hospitals: Bulli Hospital, Milton-Ulladulla Hospital and Gower Wilson Memorial Hospital (Lord Howe Island).
  • Seven sub-acute facilities: War Memorial Hospital (Waverley), Calvary Health Care Sydney, Coledale Hospital, Port Kembla Hospital, Kiama Hospital, David Berry Hospital and Garrawarra Centre.

SESIAHS provides a supportive learning and working environment that helps our residents, senior residents, registrars and fellows succeed in their chosen career. A broad range of clinical experiences is available. Excellent research opportunities exist in an extensive range of clinical areas.

SESIAHS has academic links with the University of New South Wales and the University of Wollongong. Medical students from the University of New South Wales undertake their clinical placements in SESIAHS hospitals.
