Working Conditions

Trainees have the option of taking 1 or 2 year contracts with the Network, depending on their stage of training and their career goals. The Network has a principle of ensuring that those candidates sitting the RACP examination are located at their base hospital for terms 4, 1 & 2 prior to and during the 2 year exam cycle, and where possible term 3 of the first year.

Flexible work conditions are available, as well as a dedicated salary packaging program. Accommodation is available at the four major locations within the Network for trainees undertaking terms away from their home base hospital.

There are no terms of nights anywhere within the Network. The usual arrangement is for a week of nights to be done once per term, or occasionally 2 weeks in the one term when you are based at Prince of Wales, Sydney or Wollongong Hospitals.

Trainees based at Sydney or Prince of Wales Hospital will usually do one overtime/sick relief shift per week at Prince of Wales Hospital. Overtime at Port Macquarie is usually one overtime shift per week, and one weekend of overtime per month. Trainees based at Wollongong Hospital participate in the overtime roster, which involves one, or sometimes two, overtime shifts per week.

Leave Entitlements

  • Trainees are allowed to use 2 weeks of study leave (dependent on individual entitlements) to attend one of the training conferences (RPA BPT Revision Course; DeltaMed; Dunedin).
  • Trainees sitting the written exam are allowed 1 week of study leave (dependent on individual entitlements) prior to the exam, and if possible, an additional week of annual leave.
  • Trainees sitting the clinical exam are allowed, if possible, 1 week of annual leave between the written and clinical exam.
